A procedure for slicing and characterizing soft heterogeneous and irregular-shaped tissue

Abstract This paper presents a slicing technique useful to prepare precise and repeatable samples from organs which are irregularly shaped and highly heterogeneous for mechanical testing and advanced microscopy observation. The suggested technique does not seem to influence the internal microstructure and it is employed here for testing specimens cut from different region of the meniscal tissue. Fast Fourier Transform analysis is used to quantify characteristic features of the microstructure (collagen fibers orientation, pore size) after slicing prior mechanical testing. Wooden panel paintings investigation: An air-coupled ultrasonic imaging approach

In this paper, a method for the study of wooden panel paintings using air-coupled acoustical imaging is presented. In order to evaluate the advantages of the technique, several samples were made to mimic panel paintings along with their typical defects. These specimens were tested by means of both single-sided and through-transmission techniques using planar transducers. Image data were processed by means of a two-dimensional (2-D)-fast Fourier transform-based algorithm to increase the S/N ratio and 2-D representations (C-scans) were generated. Time and frequency analysis of the static balance in young adults with Down syndrome

The main objective of this study is to understand the differences in equilibrium control between normal subjects and those with Down syndrome. A total of 54 subjects participated voluntarily, divided into control group and Down syndrome group. The equilibrium of the subjects was tested under two conditions: bipedal support with eyes open and closed. The signals were analyzed in a time and frequency domain. Free-depths reconstruction with synthetic impulse response in integral imaging

Integral Imaging provides spatial and angular information of three-dimensional (3D) objects, which can be used both for 3D display and for computational post-processing purposes. In order to recover the depth information from an integral image, several algorithms have been developed. In this paper, we propose a new free depth synthesis and reconstruction method based on the two-dimensional (2D) deconvolution between the integral image and a simplified version of the periodic impulse response function (IRF) of the system. An optimized mass storage FFT for vector computers

Abstract The performance of a segmented FFT algorithm which allows the out-of-core computation of the Fourier transform of a very large mass storage data array is presented. The code is particularly optimized for vector computers. Tests performed mainly on a CONVEX C210 vector computer showed that, for very long transforms, tuning of the main parameters involved leads to computation speed and global efficiency better than for FFTs performed in-core. The use of tunable parameters allows optimization of the algorithm on machines with different configurations.

One of them is the correct treatment of the involved electrostatics in an efficient and highly scalable way. Fast Image Mosaicing for Panoramic Face Recognition

In this article, we present some development results of a system that performs mosaicing (or mosaicking) of panoramic faces. Our objective is to study the feasibility of panoramic face construction in real-time. To do so, we built a simple acquisition system composed of 5 standard cameras which, together, can take simultaneously 5 views of a face at different angles. Then, we chose an easily hardware-achievable algorithm, consisting of successive linear transformations, in order to compose a panoramic face from these 5 views.
